On October 10, 2024, TD Bank agreed to pay fines totaling about $3 billion from a number of U.S. regulators after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to systemic failures in its anti-money laundering program. According to an October 10, 2024 article published in The Wall Street Journal entitled “TD Faces $3 Billion Penalty, Curbs on Growth,” TD bank “failed to properly monitor money laundering by drug cartels” and an investigation was opened into TD’s internal controls after “agents discovered a Chinese criminal operation had laundered millions of dollars in fentanyl sales through TD branches in New York and New Jersey and bribed bank employees.” The Attorney General for United States, Merrick Garland, reportedly said in a press conference that “TD bank created an environment that allowed financial crime to flourish.” The Attorney General stated that “By making its services convenient for criminals, it became one.” On this news, the price of TD Bank stock fell $4.07 per share, or 6.4%, to close at $59.44 per share on October 10, 2024.
